Revolution’s Joseph named MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK - New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph was voted Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week for Week 28 of the 2009 season. Joseph scored both goals in the Revolutions’ 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, Sept. 26.

After surrendering a goal in the sixth minute, New England began its comeback when Sounders FC was whistled for handball in the box. Joseph stepped to the spot and ripped a shot past Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller to even the score in the 51st minute. The goal was Joseph’s eighth of the season.

Joseph, who has adapted well this season when used in place of injured forwards, continued to pressure the Seattle defense throughout the game. With three minutes left to play, Jeff Larentowicz found space with the ball on the right flank and delivered a lofted cross into the penalty area. Joseph ran unmarked into the area and directed a powerful header into the right side netting, sealing the victory and three vital points for the Revolution. The win boosted New England from fifth to third place in the Eastern Conference standings and put the Revolution in playoff contention. They currently hold the final wild card berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs race.

Joseph is in the midst of the most productive season in his seven-year MLS career. He leads the Revolution in goals and assists with eight of each, surpassing his previous career bests of six goals and five assists. A three-time Best XI selection (2005, 2007, 2008) and a five-time MLS All-Star (2004-2008), Joseph beat out FC Dallas’ Jeff Cunningham to capture his first Player of the Week award. Joseph and the Revs take on FC Dallas on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, as part of a doubleheader with the Mexican National Team facing the Colombian National Team.

Goal.com’s MLS Player Of Week 28: NE Revolution’s Shalrie Joseph

.

Games are running out for teams to seal a playoff spot, and all the big names are showing up to prove they belong in the post season. One man who refuses to be left out is Shalrie Joseph, whose two goal haul against Seattle Sounders FC gave the New England Revolution a narrow win.

“What would the MLS post-season be without the New England Revolution? Shalrie Joseph is doing his darndest to make sure we don’t have to find out,” said chief editor Andrea Canales.

Since joining Major League Soccer, Joseph has helped lead the Revs to the MLS cup final three times, but has yet to win the trophy.

“Need somebody to play big in a must win match? Call Joseph,” said associate editor Allen Ramsey. “The Revs were down a goal when captain Steve Ralston got hurt and had to leave the game. Joseph helped the Revs regroup with his steady presence in the middle of the park. Just after the break he leveled the match from the spot. The match was still level when Revolution striker Edgaras Jankauskas had to leave with an injury. So what do you do? Move Shalrie up front where he scored the match winner in the 87th minute, keeping playoff hopes well and truly alive in New England.”

Or, as Goal.com Magazine chief editor Greg Lalas so succinctly put it, “Guy’s a monster.”
